One of our designers is an avid Moleskine notebook user and was continually frustrated with losing his favorite pen in the bottom of his bag, or worse, leaving it on his desk at home.  Clipping a pen to the cover or spine was always awkward, and loose pens and pencils have a way of not being easily found when they are needed most.
